Sustainable Relationships

I have begun writing a curriculum set for high schoolers, but the lessons apply to all of us, actually. My first lesson plan, entitled “How To Be A Good Human,” takes a close look at issues like empowerment, character, values, relationships, etc. It is highly interactive and primarily focused on mutual respect – yes, that includes between teacher and student!

One of the lessons is about building sustainable friendships; something people of all ages seem to have a bit of trouble with. In particular, we often confuse the notion of popularity for that of relationship. Here is one of the slides from the lesson plan:

It amazes me that this type of lesson isn’t taught in every home, although I certainly realize that many children are not offered the benefit of a stable and secure living environment. This is why our schools need to step up and fill in a few of these social skills gaps.
